Forleo's most-used honesty tool. 99% of the time when we say 'I can't' (can't get up to work out, can't write the book, can't learn Italian), it's a euphemism for 'won't' — we're not willing to make the sacrifice; it's not important enough right now. Try swapping 'can't' for 'won't' or 'that's not a priority for me right now' and feel how your body responds — it's more honest and more freeing, because 'can't' implies you're a powerless puppet, while 'won't' makes you the puppet master making a choice. It also transforms relationships: telling a partner 'I can't' when you mean 'I won't' builds an inauthentic relationship on lies; honesty, though rare, is disarming and appreciated.

Origin

Forleo uses it to call herself out on her own excuses and keep honest about her real priorities; Bartlett applied it after realising 'I can't' to his girlfriend was a lie that bred resentment.

Core principles

  • 01'Can't' is usually a euphemism for 'won't'.
  • 02'Won't' restores you as the decision-maker.
  • 03How you use time reveals your true priorities.
  • 04Honesty is rare, so it's disarming and effective.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Catch the 'can't'

Notice when you're about to say 'I can't do that'.

  2. 2

Swap in 'won't' or 'not a priority'

Restate it as 'I won't' or 'that's not a priority for me right now' and feel the body's response.

Pro tip You're watching House of the Dragon instead of studying Italian — that's the honest priority.

  3. 3

    Be honest with others too

In relationships, say the true thing ('I don't want to') rather than hiding behind 'I can't'.

Pro tip Honesty is disarming and builds real trust; the lie builds resentment.

Watch out Repeated 'I can't' to a partner constructs a relationship on lies.

In the wild

The disarming cold call

A cold caller opened by saying 'this is a cold call, hang up now if you want, or give me 20 seconds' — Bartlett found the honesty so disarming he heard him out and checked the product.

Honesty cut through where the usual manipulative script would have been dismissed.

Common mistakes

Hiding behind 'I can't'

Saying 'can't' when you mean 'won't' casts you as powerless and, with others, builds an inauthentic relationship — and people usually know anyway.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone making excuses to themselves or others about priorities.

Not ideal for

Genuine impossibilities or hard constraints where 'can't' is literally true.
