A mantra Forleo lives by for anyone who knows they're in the wrong place but has no idea what the right one is. Clarity does not come from thinking, scrolling or waiting; it comes from engagement — taking action in the direction of an interest. Intern, work for free, pick up a book, take a class, get involved. Action opens creative channels, introduces you to people, and teaches you fast — including learning 'this is great as a hobby but not a career'. You'll stumble upon your own 'article that lights you up like a Christmas tree', but only by moving, not by sitting at a desk you know is wrong while doing nothing to find out what's right.

Origin

Forleo found coaching not by thinking but by stumbling on an article while she 'shouldn't have been' on the internet at work — engagement, not deliberation, revealed it.

Core principles

  • 01Clarity is a product of action, not deliberation.
  • 02Any interest is a valid direction to engage.
  • 03Experiments teach you what you don't want, too.
  • 04Sitting on your certainty of being wrong changes nothing.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Pick any interest

Identify something you're drawn to — art, baking, music — however small.

  2. 2

    Take real action toward it

Intern, volunteer, take a class, read, or get involved so you generate real experience.

Pro tip Give yourself permission to experiment and to have it not work.

Watch out Scrolling or thinking on the couch will not produce the answer.

  3. 3

Let the experience refine your direction

Notice what lights you up and what doesn't, and follow the signal.

In the wild

The article that lit her up

Forleo discovered coaching by reading an article while at her magazine job — engagement in a nearby field surfaced the path thinking never would have.

Her soul 'lit up like a Christmas tree' and she committed to building a coaching business.

Common mistakes

Waiting for clarity before acting

Expecting to think your way to certainty keeps you stuck at a desk you know is wrong; the insight only comes from getting into action.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone who hates their situation but doesn't know what to do instead.

Not ideal for

Decisions that genuinely require careful analysis before any action.
