Epstein's umbrella term from Range for learning techniques that reduce fluency, feel unpleasant and slow you down, yet dramatically improve long-term retention and transfer. The main ones are interleaving (mixing problem types rather than blocking them), spaced repetition (returning to material almost at the point of forgetting), and the generation effect (guessing an answer before you see it). The unifying mechanism is that difficulty forces you to build a flexible mental template — matching a strategy to a problem — instead of a procedure you can only execute. The cruel twist is that blocked, easy practice produces faster visible progress and happier learners, which is exactly why people choose it.

Dozens of classrooms were randomly assigned to blocked practice (problem type A, A, A, then B, B, B) or interleaved practice (all types drawn at random). Blocked students progressed faster, were happier and rated their teachers highly.
