Keating describes science as an infinite game made up of finite games: jobs, tenure decisions, grants, discoveries, and prizes. Each finite contest has winners and losers, but none completes science or settles its enduring questions. The model asks you to identify the practice you want to continue, then place each competition inside it rather than treating the competition as the whole point. This changes the meaning of a setback. Losing a prize can hurt and may alter a project, yet it need not end the search for truth. The output is a more durable career posture: compete seriously in bounded contests while judging your direction by whether you can keep contributing to the larger game.

    Watch out Do not pretend finite contests are unimportant; distinguish them without dismissing them.

    Limit what each result means

    State what winning or losing each contest actually establishes. Refuse to turn one result into a verdict on the whole mission.

    Watch out Status can become an idol when it replaces the work itself.

    Return to the larger game

    After each result, select the next contribution, question, or experiment that keeps the enduring practice alive.

Continuing after the BICEP result

Keating's team believed BICEP had detected a signal from cosmic inflation, then had to acknowledge that galactic dust mimicked it. The apparent discovery and its retraction were finite outcomes. The larger search continued through a new observatory in Chile designed to obtain better data.

A painful reversal became input to another attempt at the enduring scientific question.
