Galpin's healthy-aging stack starts with moving well enough to avoid pain and long interruptions in training. It then adds balance, foot and hand speed, power, and eccentric strength as successive defenses against falls: maintain balance, react quickly, and possess enough strength to arrest the body if a misstep occurs. Lower-body strength also supports continued activity, helping avoid the feedback loop in which weakness causes less movement and less movement causes more weakness. Aerobic capacity supplies another reserve by keeping ordinary tasks far below maximum effort. Because strength and VO2 max tend to decline with age, Galpin recommends building them early, preserving as much capacity as possible, and maintaining enough buffer for injury, work pressure, or unavoidable periods away from training.
