A Stated Mission As A Decision Filter

A concrete public mission number isn't ego — it's a filter that says yes or no to every opportunity

Chatterjee publicly committed to 'help 100 million people live better lives'. He was scared it would read as ego, but its real value turned out to be as a decision filter: with vast incoming to his inbox, the mission lets him ask of any opportunity, 'will this get me closer to 100 million or not?', and decide fast. He treats the specific number as a useful tool for a season rather than a forever-truth — missions serve you at particular moments and can be revised. Using media leverage (a TV show reaching 5 million weekly, then 70 countries) is how a simple, strong message scales toward the number.

Origin

He set the number partly on the logic that if just 1% of the 5 million weekly viewers of his BBC show changed something, that was already a lot of people — and later noticed the number was mainly earning its keep as a filter.

Core principles

  • 01A concrete mission number is a filter, not a boast.
  • 02Filter every opportunity by whether it advances the mission.
  • 03Missions serve a season; revise them, don't be enslaved to them.
  • 04Leverage (media, scale) is how a simple message reaches the number.

How to run it

  1. 1

    Set a concrete mission

State a specific, ideally quantified mission that captures the impact you're aiming for.

  2. 2

    Filter opportunities through it

For each incoming ask, decide quickly whether it moves you toward the mission or not.

Pro tip This is how you say no to good-but-off-mission opportunities without agonising.

  3. 3

    Revisit and revise

Treat the mission as a tool for a season; update it when it starts to feel limiting.

Watch out Don't cling to the number as identity — Chatterjee came to see 100M as itself limiting.

In the wild

100 million as a yes/no gate

Faced with endless incoming, Chatterjee runs each opportunity against 'does this get me closer to 100 million?' to decide.

Faster, cleaner decisions and less overwhelm from a full inbox.

Common mistakes

Treating the mission as permanent identity

Clinging to a fixed mission number long after it stops fitting turns a useful filter into a cage; missions should be revised.

Is it for you?

Best for

Operators and creators overwhelmed by incoming opportunities.

Not ideal for

Early explorers who don't yet know their direction.
