Maté uses a puppet-and-strings analogy to describe how unresolved past experiences can steer present behavior outside awareness. The mechanism begins by noticing that a reaction may not be solely about what is happening now. Rather than pushing against the pattern, which remains reactive, the person creates distance by recognizing it as an old survival response. Maté then suggests relating to the protective part as a desperate younger self that once tried to keep the person safe. Acknowledging that purpose can loosen the pattern's authority: the person can thank it, recognize that current circumstances and capacities are different, and make a more deliberate choice. The aim is not instant erasure of the past but greater freedom from automatic repetition.

Core principles
- 01A present reaction may be an old survival response
- 02Fighting a reaction can preserve the same reactive dynamic
- 03Awareness creates space between a person and a pattern
- 04Protective patterns can be acknowledged without remaining in charge
How to run it
- 1
Notice the automatic reaction
Catch a recurring response while it is happening or review it soon afterward. Treat the sense that something needs attention as the first meaningful act of awareness.
Pro tip Look for reactions that feel unusually intense, repetitive, or inflexible.
- 2
Separate past from present
Ask whether the reaction is fully explained by the current event. Name the possibility that an older experience or belief is being activated.
Pro tip Use plain language such as: this reaction may not be only about right now.
Watch out Do not use reflection to dismiss a genuine present-day threat or boundary violation.
- 3
Understand the protective role
Consider how the pattern may once have helped a younger version of you preserve attachment, avoid pain, or survive stress. Recognizing its original function reduces the need to treat it as an enemy.
- 4
Relieve the pattern of command
Acknowledge the old strategy and remind yourself that you now have capacities and choices you did not have as a child. Let it become information rather than an instruction.
Pro tip Maté frames this as thanking the protective part while saying you can handle the situation now.
Watch out Awareness may weaken a pattern gradually rather than remove it immediately.
- 5
Choose from the present
Select the response that fits current reality instead of automatically reenacting the old strategy. Repetition builds greater agency over time.
In the wild
Someone notices that mild disappointment from a partner rapidly becomes anger and a fear of being inadequate. Instead of blaming the partner or suppressing the anger, they identify the old belief that approval proves their worth. They acknowledge why that strategy once felt necessary, pause, and respond to the present disagreement rather than the childhood meaning attached to it.
→ The person gains enough distance to discuss the immediate issue without making the partner responsible for repairing an older wound.
Common mistakes
Fighting the reaction
Automatic resistance remains a reaction to the old pattern, so it does not create the freedom Maté is describing.
Treating awareness as the finish line
Maté calls awareness essential but not adequate by itself; changing entrenched patterns can require continued work and support.
Explaining away current reality
Not every strong response is only about the past. Present circumstances still need to be assessed honestly.
Is it for you?
Best for
It is best for recurring emotional reactions that feel disproportionate, rigid, or difficult to explain from the present situation alone.
Not ideal for
It is not a substitute for professional support when distress, trauma symptoms, or safety concerns are severe.
From the transcript
“this reaction of mine it's not about what's going on right now. There's something old being activated here.”
“That awareness alone weakens the it slackens the strings a bit.”
“thanks very much, but I can handle it now.”
