The episode presents RAIN as a four-part response to the five hindrances. First, recognize or realize the mental state that is present. Second, acknowledge or accept it rather than adding another layer of aversion. Third, investigate how the state arose: compare the present moment with earlier in the day, then examine conversations, messages, and events that may have contributed. Finally, practise non-identification by loosening the equation between the state and the whole self. The method does not promise that the feeling disappears. Its mechanism is increased clarity: a named and investigated state becomes an experience that can be observed, rather than an unquestioned identity or command. That clarity can make a deliberate return to the goal more possible.

Origin

Shi Heng Yi says the memorable RAIN method was taught to him. In the episode he applies it to the five hindrances that can disrupt goal-directed attention.

Core principles

  • 01A state must be recognized before it can be examined
  • 02Acceptance prevents immediate rejection of what is present
  • 03Investigation traces a state to its triggers and development
  • 04A passing state is not the whole self

How to run it

  1. 1

    Recognize

Pause and identify the mental state present right now. Use a plain label such as restless, dull, attracted, resistant, or doubtful.

Pro tip Describe the current state before explaining it.

  2. 2

    Accept

Acknowledge that the state is present without immediately pushing it away. Acceptance here means accurate recognition, not approval of every impulse or circumstance.

Watch out Acceptance does not require accepting harmful behavior or unsafe conditions.

  3. 3

    Investigate

Trace how the state developed. Ask when it began, what changed, whom you interacted with, and which event or message may have nourished it.

Pro tip Compare the present state with how you felt earlier to narrow the trigger window.

Watch out Investigation should clarify the pattern, not become endless rumination.

  4. 4

    Practise non-identification

Treat the body, thoughts, and investigated state as experiences rather than the total definition of who you are. Create enough distance to choose what happens next.

Pro tip Use the phrasing 'restlessness is present' instead of 'I am a restless person.'

In the wild

Tracing an afternoon of restlessness

Shi Heng Yi gives the example of noticing restlessness that was absent in the morning. The person accepts that the feeling is present, then investigates what happened since waking: a conversation, a message, or another event may have contributed to the change.

The state is linked to a possible trigger and held with more distance.

Common mistakes

Skipping acceptance

Immediately rejecting the state repeats the aversion that the method is intended to expose.

Turning the feeling into identity

The non-identification step is lost when a temporary state becomes a permanent definition of the self.

Is it for you?

Best for

It is best for people who can pause and reflect when restlessness, aversion, dullness, desire, or doubt appears.

Not ideal for

It is not emergency care, clinical treatment, or a reason to ignore immediate danger.
