Epstein's core prescription for anyone trying to get off a plateau: run an explicit four-stage loop on yourself instead of assuming experience alone teaches you. Reflect on what you're good and bad at and what needs work; plan an experiment to work on it (a job, a class, a change in approach); monitor it objectively or subjectively; then evaluate whether the experiment actually made you better. People who repeat that cycle keep improving, and Epstein argues the science is clear that we do not extract everything available from our experiences unless we do this deliberately. He recommends running it in a journal with basic questions: what am I trying to do, why, what do I need to learn, who can help me, what experiment can I set up.

It comes from Dutch developmental research by Ruth Elferink-Gemser, who followed footballers from age 12 into senior careers and found the kids who got off performance plateaus were the ones questioning their own drills and naming what they needed to work on.

    Design a concrete experiment for working on the gap — taking a class, changing a job, altering an approach mid-task.

    Pro tip Epstein's running analogy: a finishing-time goal tells you nothing to do, but 'try moving with 300 metres to go' is actionable.

    Watch out Over-focusing on long-term planning gives you goals you cannot act on in the moment.

    Monitor

    Track the experiment with some measure, whether objective data or an honest subjective read.

    Evaluate and pick the next experiment

    Judge whether the experiment made you better, then use that verdict to choose the next one.

    Pro tip Keep the reflections written down — the army's talent-based branching programme required cadets to log theirs in an online portal.

The Dutch footballers who questioned their drills

Researchers filmed young players from age 12; the ones who escaped plateaus were those asking trainers why they were doing a drill and naming a different weakness they wanted to attack.

Several went on to sides that were World Cup runners-up, while equally physical peers stalled.
