Saad distinguishes proximate explanations from ultimate explanations. A proximate account describes what happens and how it happens: the trigger, feeling, physiology, cognition, or immediate incentive. An ultimate account asks the Darwinian question of why a mechanism with that form may have emerged or persisted. His example is sex: saying it feels good helps explain the immediate motivation, while reproduction supplies a proposed evolutionary function for why sexually reproducing organisms possess motivating systems. The method requires both levels to be stated and tested separately. Neither automatically outranks the other, and a convincing proximate mechanism does not prove an evolutionary story. The value is completeness: it exposes when an explanation has stopped at the first causal layer.
