Priestley's central thesis about where human value is heading. Something functional performs a task reliably. Something vital is irreplaceable life force — the word vitality carries both meanings. The school system was designed to produce component labour, where your value is your functionality and therefore failure is catastrophic. But in a post-AI world, most of what schooling can teach won't stay valuable for long, because AI is superb at functionality. What it can't do is breathe life into something: pitch it into existence, create it, take ownership of it and enrol others into it. When you're the irreplaceable life force, failure stops being a threat — you're just conducting experiments to find the way that works. It also explains how one person can be meaningfully involved in 40 companies: not functionally, but as the energy without which the result would be different.
Origin
Priestley formalised the idea while writing Key Person of Influence, noticing people around whom things come to life and, when they leave, quietly dissipate.
Core principles
- 01Vitality means both irreplaceable and life force.
- 02The school system optimised for component labour, where failure is unacceptable.
- 03AI is excellent at content and functionality; humans supply context and life force.
- 04If your value is functionality, failure is fatal; if it's vitality, failure is just experiments.
- 05You discover your own vitality by being around vital people.
How to run it
- 1
Stop locating your value in reliability
Recognise the belief that you're valuable because you reliably perform tasks, and understand it's the belief that makes failure feel unsurvivable.
- 2
Find the thing you can be the irreplaceable life force of
Identify something you pitch into existence, create, innovate, take ownership of and enrol others into — where your removal changes the result.
Pro tip The test is simple: if you're not involved, does it quietly dissipate?
- 3
Supply AI with context, not tasks
Use AI for content and functionality while you provide the context and purpose it cannot generate — the answer to why we're doing this in the first place.
Pro tip Five people who share and create a context together can do the work of 500 using AI.
Watch out AI is equally good at maximising you as a consumer as a creator — it will happily drive you to 16 hours on TikTok if you let it use you.
- 4
Get into high-vitality environments
Deliberately place yourself around people who are full of life, since low-vibration environments where everyone suppresses their life force to stay functional will pull you down to match.
In the wild
Two magicians use the identical fake thumb — the functional gadget. One gets 'you're just wearing a fake thumb'; the other makes you believe in magic, because of how they enrol your attention and beliefs.
→ The gadget was never the trick; the life force brought into it was.
Bartlett is asked how he can be involved in 40 different companies; Priestley's answer is that he isn't functionally involved in any of them.
→ He breathes life force energy into 40 companies — nobody is asking him to come and work in the office.
Common mistakes
Building your identity on being functional
It made sense in a component-labour economy but leaves you both terrified of failure and directly competing with AI at the thing AI is best at.
Letting AI use you rather than using AI
The same system that can push you to superhuman levels of creativity will push you to the outer edges of consumption if you never make a conscious choice.
Is it for you?
Best for
Professionals worried about AI displacing their role, and founders trying to understand what only they can contribute.
Not ideal for
Roles where reliable, standardised execution genuinely is the deliverable and the value.
